Uploading Old Deeds Online
Chennai: The Tamil Nadu government has decided to upload old deeds, registered between 1865 and 2009, onto a digital platform. For this purpose, a fund allocation of ₹89 crore has been sanctioned.
Tamil Nadu has 575 sub-registrar offices, where property transactions, including the sale of houses and agricultural land, are recorded.
Since July 6, 2009, all deed registrations have been done digitally. As a result, applicants can easily obtain copies of these deeds, which are also available on CDs provided by the registration department.
However, deeds registered between 1865 and July 5, 2009, remain in physical form, which poses challenges in locating and retrieving copies. Consequently, applicants requesting copies of these older deeds often face delays and inconvenience.
To address this issue, the government has decided to digitize all deeds from 1865 to 2009. An allocation of ₹89 crore has been made for this initiative, and tenders have been issued by the registration department.
The selected companies will be responsible for digitizing the old documents. The registration department aims to complete this digitization project by December 31.
