Types of Tiles to Use When Building a New House

Many people building new homes nowadays do not complete their construction without using tiles. If you are constructing a new home, it's essential to know what types of tiles to buy and what to consider when purchasing them.

Types of Tiles

Generally, there are many types of tiles. Some of the most commonly used tiles include Nano, PGVT (Polished Glazed Vitrified Tiles), Double Charge, Parking, Normal Wall Tiles, Waterproof Wall Tiles, Roof Tiles (Cooling Tiles), Matt Finish Tiles, Elevation Tiles, and Decoration Tiles. Let's take a closer look at these types of tiles.

Nano Tiles

Nano tiles are a basic model and a low-budget option. They do not come in a wide range of colors or designs and are typically available in ivory-based colors. Nano tiles tend to fade quickly and are suitable for commercial buildings. They are priced at ₹35 per square foot.

Polished Glazed Vitrified Tiles (PGVT)

This type of tile is a step above Nano tiles, offering a glossy finish. They are suitable for medium-budget homes. These tiles come in various designs and are ideal for residential use only, as they are prone to scratches due to their glossy nature. PGVT tiles are ₹10 more expensive than Nano tiles.

Double Charge Tiles

Double charge tiles have an additional layer coating compared to regular tiles. They come in plain, dark, and light designs, resembling granite in appearance. Due to the double coating, these tiles are durable and resistant to wear and tear, making them suitable for medium to high-budget homes. Prices range from ₹45 to ₹50 per square foot, depending on the color.

Parking Tiles

Parking tiles are commonly used in areas where cars and bikes are parked and in open spaces. They come in two types: Normal Parking Tiles and Digital Parking Tiles. Normal Parking Tiles are basic, while Digital Parking Tiles offer more designs. These tiles are slip-resistant and thicker (10 mm) compared to regular tiles (8 mm), making them durable and less prone to damage. They are priced between ₹32 and ₹35 per square foot.

Wall Tiles

Wall tiles are used to avoid painting the walls and are commonly used in bathrooms. Paint on walls tends to fade and stain over time, whereas wall tiles are long-lasting and cost-effective. These tiles typically last for 10 to 15 years and are available in sizes like 15x10, 18x12, and 2x1. The 18x12 size is the most popular due to its balanced dimensions. Prices range from ₹26 to ₹42 per square foot, depending on the size.

Waterproof Wall Tiles

Waterproof wall tiles are mainly used in bathrooms. Unlike normal wall tiles, they do not absorb water, making them more durable. These tiles are priced between ₹28 and ₹45 per square foot.

Roof Tiles

Also known as cooling tiles, roof tiles are used on terraces to prevent heat absorption, keeping the house cool. They also prevent water leakage from the roof. These tiles come in limited designs and are priced at ₹30 per square foot.

Matt Finish Tiles

Matt finish tiles have a non-glossy layer and are suitable for verandas, balconies, and other areas where a non-slip surface is needed. They are also ideal for use in living rooms and rooms for elderly people to prevent slipping. Prices range from ₹35 to ₹45 per square foot.

Elevation Tiles

Elevation tiles are used to enhance the exterior appearance of buildings. They are thick and come in natural stone and 3D designs. Prices range from ₹40 to ₹50 per square foot, depending on the size.

Decoration Tiles

Decoration tiles are used to beautify the interior of homes. They feature various designs, including animals, nature scenes, cartoons, and deities. Prices vary based on size and quality, with tiles featuring a single large image being more expensive.

Things to Consider

Use the right tiles for the right areas. When laying tiles, use spacers to ensure proper alignment and longevity. This way, if a tile gets damaged, it can be easily replaced without disturbing the others.
